The term jasper has long been used for an opaque, impure variety of silica in the form of chalcedony or microcrystalline chert. It usually contains abundant fine inclusions of hematite, iron hydroxides and other minerals. Generally it forms near volcanic activity and the circulation of hot water is thought to be required for its formation. This opaque rock can be found in virtually any colour, depending on the additional minerals.
